YOUR PERSONAL TRAINER

About image

Hi! I'm Mandy, a Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer, ready to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. But first, here's a bit more about me and what I've done.

Ever since I was a young girl, I've had a passion for both dance and running. In 2008 in my late 30's and after recently achieving my A-level dance qualification, I successfully got a place at The University of Wales Institute Cardiff - UWIC. (now called Cardiff Met) where I spent three years studying BA (Hons) Dance. I graduated with my degree as a 40 year old in 2011. Following graduation, I spent several years teaching community dance. I then also gained my qualification as a Zumba Fitness Instructor and immediately set up and led community Zumba Fitness classes too. A little later, I joined a gym and began to understand the real benefits of different types of exercise, including strength training. Therefore, the natural progression for me, was to achieve my personal training qualification and work in a gym in order to achieve my desire to help people improve their physical and mental health. I did so until the pandemic in 2020 when my personal circumstances changed and I became ill with breast cancer. After treatment and when I was well enough to return to work, I decided to operate as a freelance PT instead of working at the gym. So, now you have the choice whether I train you in your own home or an outdoor open space of your choice. I also provide an online PT service enabling you to follow a training plan I create that's specific to your health and fitness goal(s). Online plans are popular - they're a good idea for people who don't want to be tied to meeting their PT at a set time. It means, not only can you do your fitness sessions (whether a gym or home workout) where and when you choose to, but you can also train alone or with your usual gym buddy!

Besides personal training I work hard to keep myself fit, healthy and active. (The older we get, the more important it is...) I'm an enthusiastic endurance runner and have completed several full and half marathons as well as 'dipped my toe' into the world of ultra running. (My first ultra race was a mountain one in the Brecon Beacons, which was interesting for a first ultra - and I probably wouldn't advise it!) Besides running, I strength train - not only is it important to stay strong as a runner but it is also vitally important as we age and start to lose bone density.

I have trained a wide age range of clients, from young people in the 20's with a specific fitness goal to women who are in their menopause stage of life (exercise can really help improve your mental well-being during menopause and ultimately help ease symptoms - it worked for me!). Some of my clients are new to running and just signed up for their first 5k, 10k or even half marathon, and need help and advice with their training. If this is you, I can write you a training plan to include some strength and cardio to help improve your running ability and endurance and ultimately help get you across that finish line!

Since having cancer I appreciate and understand even more than ever, how precious health and life is!
If you want to lose weight, you can! If you want to get 'toned', stronger, healthier, more agile, run a marathon - whatever your goal, you can achieve it! These things just take time, dedication, commitment, focus and ultimately, the right mindset. So, if you're thinking, 'I need to get fit' or you have a specific fitness goal in mind then I'm here to help! If you have a question/query then pop it in the contact box below and I'll get right back to you. Otherwise, simply choose which training option you'd like and let's get started! It's time you to take care of you!

Can I have a PT even if I haven't exercised for years?

Absolutely! Once you've chosen the option for you, I'll contact you to arrange your free consultation. As well as a chat to discuss your fitness goal, the consultation requires you to complete a PAR-Q form which covers your recent and current activity level. Mandy Fitness always advises anyone to seek confirmation from their health practitioner before beginning an exercise programme, especially if you haven't exercised for a while.

Should I exercise if I'm going through the menopause?

Yes you should - in fact I recommend it! Bone density decreases as we age but even more so after the menopause. so it's very important to do some form of weight bearing exercise to help combat that!

Can I still exercise if I've had chest pain recently?

Only after and if your GP says it's okay for you to do so.

I really want to start exercising but don't know how to get started. Can you help?

I certainly can! Firstly, we'll have a chat to work out why you want to start exercising and then I'll create you a fitness plan based on your health/fitness goal and your current fitness level. In time you'll learn what exercises and activities you like and what you don't like and we can go from there.

I suffer with anxiety so is it really a good idea for me to exercise?

Yes, is the short answer! Exercise is my number one recommended 'medicine' for anxiety. Whether that's a full on strength or cardio session or simply a walk in the park. Exercise of any sort has a very positive impact on our mental health. (However, I'm no doctor!)

What happens if I buy an online training programme and am unsure how to do one or more of the exercises?

Contact me! When you buy an online training programme it is one made specifically for you, based on your health/fitness goals and current fitness level. Although it's an online programme I'm here for you! I'm here to help with any issues or questions regarding the plan's exercises, techniques or any other relevant query or concerns.

My doctor said I have high blood pressure so can I still exercise?

Only after and if your GP says it's okay to do so.
